Life can throw us curve balls that have the power to make us feel mentally, physically, and spiritually drained. These curve balls can make the simplest part of our days feel as though we are running a marathon with little to no training ahead of time.
If there is one thing we need more than anything else during those times, it’s the Bible.
If there is one thing we would rather not do during those times, it’s read the Bible. Because let’s face it, the temptation of seeking comfort through chocolate ice cream can be too strong.
There, I said it. Sometimes, I believe the lie that I don’t have the strength to open my Bible even when it’s what I need most in that moment.
Matthew 26:51 says it perfectly:
“Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!”
The body is weak, but the spirit is willing. I would also go as far to say that an equipped and willing spirit can go a long way.
Growing up, I had the privilege to attend a program that was focused on Scripture memorization: Awana. I’ve always had a competitive spirit, and Awana was no different. My desire was to memorize more verses than anyone else! Despite my less than pure motivation, that experience hid God’s Word in my heart, and I am so grateful.
I am grateful because, when my flesh is weak, my spirit is willing, and my spirit has been equipped with God’s Word.
I recently walked through a period of feeling mentally, physically, and spiritually drained due to an extreme situation. While I was trying my best to hold it all together, my body was telling me it was weak. However, my spirit was willing.
Due to a willing spirit that had been equipped with Scripture memorization from a young age, I didn’t have to seek out the right words for my situation. Instead, the right words found me.
When I put a burden on myself to protect as many hearts that were involved in this situation as possible, my body wanted to crack under pressure. However, my spirit reminded me that Jesus was able to say his yoke was easy and his burden was light because he knew he would one day say, “it is finished.”
All of the sudden, the burden was lifted.
When I felt less than qualified, the Belt of Truth was brought to my mind, which reminded me of the truth that I was something even better than being qualified – I was chosen (Ephesians 1:4-5).
When a lie came my way, God’s Word was in my spirit to combat them.
The Word of God is crucial to combat the schemes of the Enemy. Jesus himself combated Satan with “It is written . . .” after every temptation. Furthermore, Jesus didn’t have to flip through the pages to find what was written. He just knew. We shouldn’t have to flip through pages to find what is written either.
Instead, if we equip ourselves through Scripture memorization, we will know what is written beyond a shadow of a doubt, and our willing spirits will be much stronger for it.
If you haven’t had the same opportunities to memorize Scripture at a young age, it’s not too late! There are resources out there to help! Bible Gateway has a Scripture Memorization Resources page that can be found here. That will be a great place to start.

Anytime I am under stress we I rely on the verses I learned growing up. As I stood by my father-in-law as he passed from this world, I quoted Scripture. Verse after verse came to mind and I share them with him and believe he was eased from hearing the beloved words from God. Thank you, Tiffany, for reminding all of us of the I,portable of knowing God word.

This is so true! And such an important thing to do. It is a habit to get into to seek the Word when we’re stressed but one that has long-lasting benefits that can really help for a lifetime!

Yup! This was my push and pull for many many years until God taught me faithfulness to his word through very difficult circumstances. Here’s hoping the rest of ya’ll don’t need the heartbreak in order to treat God’s words like what it is, the bread that sustains you. 🙂
Thanks for the wisdom, sis. Enjoyed the post and your easy conversational style.

I LOVE this – it reminds me to “feed the good wolf” 🙂 Life has a way of getting in the way so we need to be feeding for those days when life tries to hold us back!

At Lit, I was so encouraged by a girl who had memorized the entire book of 2 Timothy. It lit a fire (see what i just did there…hehehe) in me to start being more intentional about memorization. In fact, I can only just say that my lack of memorizing verses is pure laziness. But girl, you struck me to the core. I’m exhausted too, and sometimes you need to just shut up, be still, and soak in His words.

So true! Although I’m not currently memorizing something, I know the value from experience. I write the verse(s) on a 3×5 card, put it in a ziplock bag, and stick it on the shower wall with the moisture. I’ve found it to be a good place to memorize!

Amen, Tiffany! I believe memorization is one way that God encourages us to “hide His Word in our hearts.” : )
